French Cocktail Hour: [You Fill in the Blank] Calls for a Celebration

“A match made in heaven, you two,” I remarked, sipping Saint-Hilaire sparkling wine as I stood between the author of Napoleon’s Privates and the author of An Irreverent Curiosity, a book about the foreskin of Jesus Christ. We were at Bar Blanc Bistro in New York City’s West Village for French Cocktail Hour, or Apéritif à la Française, an event enjoyed in 22 countries around the world.

It may officially take place annually on the first Thursday of June, but that doesn’t mean you’re too late to have a French cocktail party of your own: Just stop at the store, and bring the soiree home any night you feel like celebrating.

Josey and Jeff celebrate Jeff’s graduation from Columbia business school with Gruyère and goat cheeses, pâté, mussels a la mariniere, seasonal vegetables and crusty, fresh French bread. (The air of sophistication belies the beyond-simple preparation, I promise!)
