New NYC Temporary Art Installation: Hudson River Pilings Project

Chicagoans, remember the Cows on Parade? New Yorkers, remember The Gates? Of course you do. And I wish that long-term impact on the artist behind the upcoming Hudson River Pilings Project, sculptor Joan Benefiel. Based on the buzz at last night’s preview exhibition on Hudson River Park’s Pier 40, Benefiel was an artist with a vision, and why is it so close to being realized? Because—brace yourself—she asked. The Kansas native wanted to create sculptures to live on the Hudson River pilings near the Christopher Street Pier, approached the city for permission and has not yet been told no. What a lesson for dreamers.

The only obstacle she and the Hudson River Pilings Project team are facing is raising funds. If you want to help this exhibit come to life—their goal is fall, ‘09—click here now for more information.
